Right and Wrong

In our world's current state, the difference between right and wrong is getting hard to see.

'Gimme' and 'I want' are increasingly becoming our prime motivators.

The Deal

Have you signed your driver's licence?

Of course you have.

It may help put things in perspective if you think of your signature on your driver's licence as your commitment to abide by the terms of a contract, that is, you have agreed to drive lawfully.

What you have agreed to will have different names in different parts of the world, but you will know what it is where you live (unless you bought your licence, which is happening more and more these days).

Whatever the name is, you will have learned some or all of it in order to pass your driving test.

So, while there is much peer pressure to drive however you feel like, and there are driving instructors who will tell you this is OK, it's actually not OK.

When you passed your test and signed your own licence, in so doing you said you would drive according to, for example, The Highway Code (Britain), or The Highway Traffic Act (Ontario) or whatever is the appropriate title where you live.

You made a deal.

Honest folk keep to the deal; crooks don't. If you have smartened up, you will know which of these you are.

It has been said that the mark of a civilised society is that I recognise the difference between mine and yours. We won't get into the philosophy of private versus communal property here, but when it comes to driving on your side of the road instead of my side of the road philosphy is the last thing on our minds!

Cars and trucks don't bounce like the bumper cars in an amusement part, nor do the dead and injured get up and have lunch together as do actors when the Director yells 'Cut'.

You might wish to review The Ten Commandments as a reminder of the basis of civilised behaviour (Exodus 20:3-17).

Or you might simply want to keep in mind The Golden Rule as Jesus said, 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you' (Matthew 7:12).

These are timeless. In my view, if everyone made the inward journey and incorporated these things, most accident deaths and injuries would never happen.
